Sumita Vaid Dixit lives in New Delhi, India, with her husband and her dog, Khushi. The early years of her life were spent in Nigeria, West Africa, making paper boats and dreaming under neem trees. Otherwise, she was a business journalist. When she finally got the courage to write fiction – which was one hot July afternoon, a year on -her short story Another Time was published in Sahitya Akademi’s bi-monthly Literary Journal (2007). This extract is from her novel-in-progress, Born a Manglik. The story is about the life of Soumil and his two obsessions: a big car and enduring love. To fulfil those dreams Soumil journeys from India to China only to find that love is elsewhere.
