Jonathan Carr is a travel writer and books reviewer, based in Greece. He has also been a gardener in Britain, a teacher in Africa and a student in America. A book of his collected travel articles about Greek islands is due to be published in 2009. The following extract is taken from a novel set on the Bermuda islands at the beginning of the 17th century. Previously uninhabited, they were settled following the shipwreck of the Sea Venture, an English vessel transporting much-needed supplies to the fledgling community of Jamestown in Virginia.
